What a Daily Vehicle Inspection Covers

  • General visual condition — body damage, leaks, tyre condition
  • Lights, indicators, and safety equipment
  • Fluid levels — oil, coolant, brake fluid, washer fluid
  • Documentation — licence disc, roadworthy certificate, permits
  • Confirmation the vehicle is fit to operate that day, before the first trip

Who's Responsible

The driver assigned to the vehicle typically completes the daily inspection, with a supervisor reviewing flagged defects before the vehicle is cleared for the day. In fleets running multiple trips per day with different drivers, the daily inspection is usually the first driver's responsibility, while each subsequent driver completes a shorter pre-trip check.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a daily inspection the same as a pre-trip inspection?

Not quite — many fleets combine them into one check at the start of the day, but a daily inspection is broader (documentation, general condition) while pre-trip focuses specifically on roadworthiness before each individual trip. See our Pre-Trip Inspection Checklist for the trip-specific version.

Does a daily inspection replace the need for post-trip checks?

No — a post-trip inspection catches issues that developed during that day's driving, which a morning daily inspection can't anticipate. See our Post-Trip Inspection Checklist.

How long should a daily inspection take?

A well-designed digital checklist typically takes 5-10 minutes to complete thoroughly, depending on vehicle type and complexity.
