What Is First-Time Fix Rate?

First-Time Fix Rate measures the percentage of repairs resolved correctly on the first attempt, without the vehicle returning to the workshop for the same defect. A low first-time fix rate quietly inflates MTTR, backlog, and total maintenance cost, since every repeat visit costs more than the diagnosis that missed the issue the first time.

Formula

First-Time Fix Rate = Repairs Fixed First Time ÷ Total Repairs × 100

Count a repair as 'not first-time-fixed' if the same defect recurs within a defined window (commonly 30 days) — this catches issues masked as separate incidents.

A vehicle returning twice for the same fault costs more in labour, parts, and downtime than one diagnosed correctly the first time.
